About The Workshop

Interpretation for Beginners 1

Presented by Michael Piraner, each workshop in this series will examine 2 pieces from standard baroque recorder repertoire as a means to present strategies for developing your interpretative skills.

This series leads on from the series of workshops covering fundamentals such as basic techniques and performance practices, drawing the strands together in the act of interpretation.  The aim is to dispel the mystery surrounding musical interpretation showing that with a few simple strategies we can all increase our abilities in both playing and listening, regardless of technical ability or theoretical knowledge.

It is not strictly necessary to have attended the fundamentals series first or to have an advanced technique as the concepts presented can aid in the appreciation of music as a listener.

Workshops are recorded and made available to participants for future reference.

All materials are provided a few days before each workshop.

As is customary with Michael's workshops, participants are invited to take part in a competition based on workshop content to have the chance of winning a free half-hour lesson.

Prerequisites

Please have a soprano, alto or tenor recorder to hand. The ability to play two octaves would be advantageous. Some understanding of basic harmony may also be advantageous. All exercises are presented in versions for both C and F fingerings. You will be asked to mute your microphone when trying the exercises, but if you wish to play for the tutor to receive immediate feedback, this is welcomed if time permits.
