Jazz in the Baroque Part 1: Rhythmic Alteration | £5.00
Start: April 2, 2025, 7 p.m.
End: April 2, 2025, 8 p.m.
Time Zone: United Kingdom
About The Workshop
Like swing in jazz, French musicians in the 17th and 18th centuries often did not play the rhythm of their music exactly as written. Musicians from other nationalities also had the freedom to alter the rhythm of a piece during performance.
In this online workshop, we will explore traditions of rhythmic alteration based on historical sources, with examples for you to try.
This workshop is aimed at players of all abilities. Even if your technique is not yet up to some of the examples, we will discuss how rhythmic alteration relates to aspects of rhetoric. These concepts were important in Renaissance and Baroque composition and performance, providing you with a better appreciation and deeper understanding when listening to music.
A link to access workshop materials will be provided for participants on the weekend prior to the workshop.
Prerequisites
Please have a soprano, alto or tenor recorder for trying the examples. A basic understanding of rhythm and articulation would be beneficial for trying the musical examples.
